Staying in different areas of Bali has a become a new hobby for my family of 4. My husband and I and our kids Lola (8) and Marlow (3) are loving the experience of seeing the many different styles of hotels and villas here, and so far our Rumah Besar review is one of our favorites. We stayed 2 nights, with a couple of friends tagging along, and immediately felt welcomed, at home and completely relaxed.
Rumah Besar is a massive 5 bedroom, 5 bathroom home with space for 10 adults and up to 6 children. Are the bedrooms squished and small, you ask? No way! There is so much space you will have absolutely no worry of tripping over each other. 2 bedrooms have fabulous bunk beds that my kids absolutely loved. All the bedrooms are air conditioned to keep them nice and cool and the beds were really comfy. We slept like logs!
5 Bathrooms ensure there is never a fight over who gets the shower next. One bathroom even has a great big stone bath, 2 showers and double sinks! Each bathroom also has nice touches like stone carvings and candles.
A huge open living space, with a dining table for 14 and 2 great sofa/daybeds, stretches from the kitchen to the pool area. 6 fans and a beautiful high rattan roof keeps this area nice and cool even in the heat of the day. The kitchen is also huge – it has a garden in it – and the bar with stools was a favorite spot for the kids to sit and watch their breakfast being made.
The villa is furnished with heavy wooden furniture and lots of beautiful, natural stone, which makes it a very easy place to be. The feeling is that the owners are happy to have kids staying in the villa and have made everything very child-friendly; i.e no white seat covers, glass doors that are difficult to see, or delicate decor items. There is even a playstation in one room (with games) and each room has a flat screen TV and DVD player.
The Pool Area
One of the best things we loved most about Rumah Besar was the pool and bale to relax in. The pool has 3 depths so kids can stay to the shallower side and the cushioned bale is like a huge bed to lounge on. It’s shady and great for little ones to nap beside you while you read a book.
There is plenty of sun and shade and you can request a pool fence be installed before you arrive if you want to be able to relax and not worry about their safety. At night the pool glows blue from the lights, which the kids couldn’t get over.
Rumah Besar makes it incredibly easy to be on holiday. The villa manager Ketut was on hand to meet us when we arrived and was absolutely lovely. He introduced us to Komang and Arik, who do the cooking, cleaning, laundry, and will even look after the kids during the day. They were very sweet and had that great sense of being there when they needed to be and making themselves scarce when they were done with their work.
They made great pancakes, juices and an American breakfast for my husband and will also cook a range of Indonesian and ‘Western’ dishes for lunch and dinner upon request. They arrive at 8am and leave at 4pm unless you have requested dinner. Security staff arrive at 4pm and stay all night, so you can feel safe and secure in the villa.
Rumah Besar will also set up a driver for you for you when you want to go out or for day tours to anywhere in Bali. This costs extra on top of your stay, but I’ve always found it really nice to have someone trusted and not have to bargain with new drivers all the time.
Rumah Besar is on the outskirts of Seminyak, or what is now the very trendy area of Umalas. I was amazed at how quiet it is at night, with no road noise and no cockerels! Just 100 meters from the villa are two very child-friendly restaurants, Bumbak Coffee and La Cassetta Italian Restaurant. We ate at both and were really happy with both meals.
It’s about a 5-10 minute drive to Seminyak depending on traffic, and luckily there are some great cut throughs that allow you to avoid traffic lights that can get jammed at certain times of the day. It’s also a really easy drive to Batu Belig where there are tons of restaurants and the beach, the Canggu Club and also super-hip Berawa, Batu Bolong and Echo Beach in Canggu.
Our Impression of Rumah Besar
We really felt at home in Rumah Besar. It has obviously been planned well as a family getaway, and we felt if we had been there with our extended family or more friends it would have been a definite ‘more-the-merrier’ kind-of feeling. The ease of having breakfast cooked in villa and having a kitchen means it’s simple to make snacks during the day, which always means money saved on eating out all the time.
If there was anything at all that I worried about in the house, and really I was extremely relaxed, it would be the floor tiles, which can get very slippery when little ones come in from the pool. We didn’t have any spills, but I was very aware that I had to make sure everyone was well dried before running inside.
However, the staff and very welcoming atmosphere was just incredible for us. We are a pretty laid-back family and like to settle in wherever we’re staying. This definitely wasn’t a problem at Rumah Besar!!
